The Lakes We Serve
Austin's most beautiful lakes are our playground. The calm, constant-level water of Lake Austin, Lake LBJ, and Lake Marble Falls is perfect for learning, while wide-open Lake Travis has room for everyone — from first-timers to advanced riders and big groups.
Lake Austin
Formed in 1939 by Tom Miller Dam on the Colorado River, Lake Austin is a constant-level reservoir held steady by releases from Lake Travis just upstream. Winding roughly 20 miles through steep, tree-covered Hill Country canyons on the western edge of the city, its narrow, protected shape keeps the water calm and glassy year-round — ideal for wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and families learning new water sports. Sitting just west of the city center — most boat ramps are only about a 15-minute drive (roughly 6–10 miles) from downtown — it pairs easy access with genuinely scenic surroundings. Because its narrow channel draws plenty of weekend boat traffic, Lake Austin is at its best during the week, when the water is calmest and the crowds are thin.
- Constant-level water for smooth conditions
- Close to downtown Austin
- Best mid-week — calmest water and fewer crowds
Lake Travis
★ Our personal favoriteFormed in 1942 by Mansfield Dam, Lake Travis is the largest of the Highland Lakes and one of Texas' most popular boating destinations. It winds about 65 miles up the Colorado River with 271 miles of shoreline, deep blue water reaching depths near 190 feet, and wide-open coves. Because it's so much bigger — and far less crowded than Lake Austin — there's plenty of room to spread out, which makes it great for beginners and advanced riders alike, as well as large groups and full-day lake adventures. It's our personal favorite: the dramatic limestone cliffs, deep blue water, and unforgettable sunsets make it the lake we love riding most.
- Expansive open water and deep coves
- Room to spread out — great for all levels and big groups
- Deepest of the Highland Lakes, with dramatic cliffs
Lake LBJ
About 45 miles northwest of Austin, Lake LBJ (originally Lake Granite Shoals, later renamed for President Lyndon B. Johnson) was formed by Wirtz Dam in 1951. As a constant-level reservoir, it stays calm and glassy — perfect for wakeboarding and foiling — which makes it a favorite training spot for instructors and riders chasing the cleanest possible wake. Set where the Colorado and Llano rivers meet near Kingsland and ringed by quiet Hill Country towns, it offers a relaxed experience for most of the year — though it does draw its share of boat traffic during the peak summer months.
- Constant-level lake with smooth water year-round
- Excellent wake conditions for all skill levels
- Relaxed most of the year, though busier in peak summer
Lake Marble Falls
Just downstream from Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls is the smallest and newest of the Highland Lakes, formed in 1951 by Max Starcke Dam. This narrow reservoir stretches roughly six miles right through the heart of the town of Marble Falls, framed by granite and limestone bluffs and held at a nearly constant level for smooth, dependable water. It's the quietest and most peaceful of the lakes we run — the ideal spot for smaller groups or anyone looking to escape the crowds while still enjoying great conditions.
- Clear, calm water through Marble Falls
- Framed by granite and limestone Hill Country bluffs
- Quiet, intimate atmosphere for small groups
We also run the other Highland Lakes — including Inks Lake and Lake Buchanan — and we're happy to travel to other lakes across Texas. Trips outside our home waters come with an added travel fee, so just reach out and we'll put together a quote for wherever you'd like to ride.
