Lake Travis, a 64-mile reservoir on the Colorado River just west of Austin, Texas, is widely considered the best wakesurfing lake in the state — and for good reason. Deep water, dramatic hill country shoreline, and easy access from Austin make it a draw for everyone from first-time riders to seasoned shredders.

At Board Bound Wake Co, we run wakesurf and wakeboard sessions on Lake Travis almost every week from spring through fall. Here's why we love it, how it stacks up against Lake Austin and the other Highland Lakes, and what you should know before you put in.

Why Lake Travis works for wakesurfing

A few features make Travis uniquely suited to wake sports.

It's deep. Lake Travis hits 190 feet at Mansfield Dam — the deepest of the Highland Lakes. Deeper water produces a cleaner, more consistent wake than the shallow, choppy water you fight on smaller lakes.

It's big. At 18,929 acres with 270 miles of shoreline, there's always a quiet cove to ride in even when the main basin is busy. We rotate between half a dozen go-to spots depending on wind direction and the day's traffic.

The water stays clean. Unlike some Texas lakes that turn brown after a hard rain, Travis benefits from the Highland Lakes flood control system — sediment settles out upstream, leaving Travis with that signature green-blue tint most of the year.

The mornings are glass. From sunrise to about 10 a.m. on most summer days, the lake is dead calm. That's prime wakesurf time — the boat can lay down a perfectly clean wave with no chop interference.

Lake Travis vs Lake Austin: which should you choose?

These are the two big options for wake sports in the Austin area, and they're surprisingly different.

Quick recommendation:

  • First-time wakesurfer? Lake Austin's smaller size and protected coves are easier to learn on. We run private lessons there too.
  • Want to ride longer sets and have room on a Saturday? Lake Travis, every time.
  • Mixed group with kids and adults? Lake Travis — there's always something for everyone, and the bigger water means kids can tube while adults surf.

Where we put in

Most public ramps on Lake Travis can handle a wakesurf boat. A few we use regularly:

  • Mansfield Dam Park — paved ramp, reliable, modest day-use fee
  • Hudson Bend — close to north-shore neighborhoods
  • Pace Bend Park — west end, popular with daytrippers, busy on summer weekends
  • Volente Beach Resort — guest access if you're staying or have a slip

If you're booking a private boat charter or lesson with us, we handle the launch — you just show up at the dock.

When to go

Lake Travis is rideable most of the year, but the prime window is April through October.

  • April–May: Cool mornings, fewer boats, lake usually full after winter rain. Underrated months.
  • June–August: Peak season. Aim for before 10 a.m. for glass water, or after 6 p.m. for evening glassoff.
  • September–October: Our favorite stretch. Warm water, mild air, the summer crowds have gone home.
  • November–March: Doable for cold-water enthusiasts; bring a wetsuit.

Lake levels matter — Travis is a flood-control reservoir and can swing 50+ feet between drought and flood years. Check the LCRA Highland Lakes status before you plan a trip far in advance.

What to bring

We provide the boat, captain, gear (boards, ropes, vests, handles), and professional instruction. You bring:

  • Sunscreen (reef-safe appreciated)
  • Swimwear and a towel
  • A change of clothes for the ride home
  • Snacks and non-glass drinks
  • A waterproof phone case if you want pictures

That's it. We supply everything else.

Ready to ride Lake Travis?

If you've never wakesurfed before, the best way to start is a private lesson — captain, boat, and gear included, with a coach in the boat with you the whole time. If you've got a group and want a chill day on the water, our private boat charters put you on Travis with a captain handling everything.

Either way: see you on the water.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lake Travis or Lake Austin better for first-time wakesurfers?
Lake Austin is gentler for absolute beginners — smaller surface area, more no-wake zones, calmer water. Lake Travis is better once you have your sea legs and want longer sets and bigger water.
What time of day is best for wakesurfing on Lake Travis?
Early morning (sunrise to about 10 a.m.) is ideal — the water is glass, boat traffic is low, and the wakes set up cleanly. Evening glassoff after 6 p.m. is the second-best window.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes — every rider must be comfortable swimming in deep water and will wear a Coast Guard–approved life vest at all times.
How much does a wakesurf lesson on Lake Travis cost?
Our standard private lesson is two hours and includes the boat, captain, and all gear. Pricing varies by season; see our private lessons page for current rates.
